Baseline Concussion Testing
During baseline concussion tests, athletes' balance and brain function are assessed (as well as evaluating memory skills and concentration, as well as how quickly they think and solve problems), as well as any concussion symptoms present. Baseline tests (pre-injury tests) can be used to compare with a similar examination conducted during the season by a health care professional if an athlete has a suspected concussion. By comparing post-injury test results with baseline test results, health care professionals can identify the effects of the injury and make more informed decisions regarding return to work, school, and sport.
SCAT5 – The SCAT5 is a standardized tool for evaluating injured athletes for concussions and can be used in athletes aged 13 years and older. For children aged 12 years or younger, we use the Child SCAT5. The SCAT5 scoring summary includes the following sections:
- Symptom assessment
- Cognitive evaluation - Immediate Memory & Concentration
- Coordination examination (Tandem Gait)
- Balance examination -mBESS (modified Balance Error Scoring System)
- Concussion Vital Signs– CVS (Free Unlimited Concussion Management Testing for every school) is the most widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion management tool available at no cost. In addition to establishing neurocognitive performance baselines, healthcare providers use CVS test scores as an important component of their assessment of a potential head injury.

Vestibular Therapy
We offer vestibular therapy for patients with lingering concussion symptoms. Several studies have shown that patients with vestibular rehabilitation reported less dizziness and improved balance after a concussion.
